WESTFIELD, NJ — The Westfield High School boys varsity tennis team won the NJSIAA Section 2, Group 4 championship Monday with a 4-1 victory over J.P. Stevens.
Damien Ruparel, at first singles; Matthew Bartok, at third singles; Rob Faktor and David Sprung, at first doubles; and Brad Hornbeck and Jacob Tananbaum, at second doubles; were all winners to give the Blue Devils (20-3) the crown.
The title marked the fourth consecutive year that Westfield has won Section 2, Group 4.
"This was our fourth consecutive Group 4, North 2 sectional championship," Westfield coach George Kapner said. "That means that our seniors have been part of a program that won the conference, county and sectional championships every year that they were in high school.
"Furthermore, Damien Ruparel has been a starting singles player on all four of those teams, playing first singles in each of the last two years. Two years ago, we also won the Group 4 State Championship. Now we get the opportunity to try to win that championship once again on Wednesday in Mercer County Park."
