WESTFIELD, NJ — Buona Pizza beat out seven other local pizzerias participating in the Westfield Area Y's first-ever Pizza Palooza competition Sunday for the best-tasting slice of plain pizza. The event was held at the Y's main facility, 220 Clark Street.

The eight participating Westfield and Garwood pizzerias donated 14 pies each:  Benvenuti's, Buona Pizza, Casa Di Pizza, Dominos, Ferraro's, Gennaro's, Rudy's and Sorrento's. It was enough for the 200-plus guests to try a slice from each pizzeria and vote for their favorite.

"Thank you to the pizza places — great food donated for this event so that all dollars can go towards helping people that need the Y. That's what this event is about — helping everybody to enjoy the Y," said Rob Faggiano, Y Aquatics Director.

The event raised $1,600 for the Westfield Area Y's Annual Support Campaign, which provides over $400,000 in direct financial assistance to individuals and families in need to enable their participation at the Y. Approximately 90 percent of scholarship awards enable children to attend child care and day camp programs, while approximately 10 percent supports membership and program participation.

"This family event helps to raise funds for the Y while also showcasing local businesses," said Sharon London, Y aquatic director. "It's a win-win."

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
