ROSELAND, NJ — The first-annual Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk, combining three former walks (Essex County, Morris County and Union County) into one mega walk, will be held at the ADP Corporate Headquarters on Sunday, Oct. 23 in Roseland.

The funds raised at the Heart Walk support putting up-to-the-minute research into doctors’ hands so that they can better prevent and treat heart disease and stroke in both adults and children. The Heart Walk is about getting life-saving information to those who need it most—information that can save a life, such as how to eat better, how to recognize the warning signs of heart attack and how to talk to a doctor about critical health choices.

The American Heart Association is committed to helping Americans eat better, move more and live longer. The first annual Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk is part of this movement and serves as the cornerstone walking, recognition and celebration event, which annually brings together thousands helping to raise funds to support lifesaving cardiovascular research in an effort to fight the nation’s No. 1 and No. 5 health threats: heart disease and stroke.

“Designed to promote physical activity and heart-healthy living, the Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk will create an environment that's fun and rewarding for the entire family,” said Mark Connolly, MD, FACS, FACC, President of the American Heart Association in Northern New Jersey and Chairman, Department of Surgery, Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center. “We’ve been able to put together an extraordinary executive leadership team to help us with the first annual Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk which is sure to be a great success.”

This year for the first time, the American Heart Association is introducing a Kids Heart Challenge, a special half-mile course with obstacles designed specifically for kids ages 5-12. Every participant will receive a Kids Heart Challenge bandana upon registration and a medal for participating. There is a $10 Donation per child and parents must complete a waiver for children to participate.

Heart disease and stroke remain the leading health threats to all Americans, which inspires families, friends and co-workers from all over Northern New Jersey to form heart walk teams.  Many will walk in honor or in memory of loved ones affected by heart disease, stroke and congenital heart defects.

“Through education, encouragement and sheer will, we as a community can take that giant step toward our own heart health while inspiring others to do the same,” said Connolly. “The 2016 Bergen Passaic Heart Walk is an opportunity to take that first step. The event is a fun-filled activity for families, companies and community organizations to rally around a great cause, while also taking advantage of free resources like heart-health information, CPR demonstrations, health screenings and more.”

The American Heart Association in Northern New Jersey recently announced the executive leadership team that will lead the organization’s efforts for the new Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk being held

Northern New Jersey business leaders Leanne Blair of Morristown, Director of Marketing, Bayer Aspirin at Bayer Consumer Care; Joseph P. Cadicina, Esq. of Franklin Lakes, managing member of Laufer, Dalena, Cadicina, Jensen & Boyd. LLC; Omari S. Frazier, MBA of Maplewood, Vice President and Senior Market Manager, Investors Bank; Dr. Robert Hilkert of Montgomery Township, Vice President and Global Program Medical Director in the Cardiovascular and Metabolism Group at Novartis Pharmaceutical Corporation; William Neate MBA, MA of Tewksbury, system administrator for Cardiovascular Services for Atlantic Health in Northern New Jersey; Ami Simunovich of Morristown, Associate General Counsel, Regulatory and Compliance, at C.R. Bard; and Carl J. Soranno of Flanders, Member, Business Litigation Chair, Family Law, Brach Eichler, are members of the executive leadership team this year.

Registration will open at 8:00 a.m. on Oct. 23 while the Heart Walk kicks off at 10 a.m. By joining the Heart Walk, participants are joining more than one million people in more than 300 cities across America taking a stand against heart disease and stroke while helping save lives.

The Greater Northern New Jersey Heart Walk is nationally sponsored by Subway and locally sponsored by Bayer, NJM Insurance Group, RWJBarnabas Health, Fairleigh Dickinson University School of Pharmacy and Kessler Rehabilitation Institute. Media sponsors include WDHA-FM, WMTR-AM, TAPinto and PIX 11.

Join more than a million people taking a stand against heart disease and stroke.  Walk with friends, family, coworkers or community partners and bond with along the way.
