FANWOOD, NJ —  Fanwood police are investigating an accident that tied up traffic at the intersection of North Ave. and Westfield Road just before 2:00 p.m. on Thursday. 

The driver was a 28-year-old male from Brooklyn who was traveling with a 22-year-old female passenger also from Brooklyn. The vehicle was heading from Westfield toward Fanwood when it attempted to pass a car that was turning into Quikcheck, according to Fanwood Police Chief Richard Trigo. 

The vehicle went into the left hand lane (eastbound lane), hit a curb, took out a street sign on North Ave. and flipped over. It skidded across Westfield Road and took down a stop sign in the process.

"We are very fortunate that this didn't happen a few minutes later when many kids who walk home from the high school are at that intersection," Fanwood Fire Chief John Piccola said. 

The driver and passenger were transported to a Morristown Memorial Hospital. The injuries do not appear to be life threatening, according to witnesses.
