CLARK, NJ – A regular afternoon at the Clark Recreation Center was turned upside-down Saturday when an someone smashed car windows in the parking lot and stole at least two purses, authorities said.
Four cars were broken into, according Clark Chief of Police Pedro Matos. He said the vehicles’ side windows were smashed.
“The funny is, there were numerous people all around while this was going on and no one saw anything,” Matos said.
The Clark Recreation Center is adjacent to the Clark Municipal Building on Westfield Avenue.
Victims discussed the incident on the Clark Neighbors Facebook page.
“My car was one of them,” Priscilla Todaro posted. “I feel so violated and beside myself. They had some nerve during the day, a packed rec center with the police down the street and no witnesses. Not even thinking I left my purse. They didn't take my daughters phone or iPad and thank God I had my credit cards and id on me. Another woman wasn't so lucky. They already were charging her Amex card up. I am still shaking with disbelief and shock.”
According to posts, the center was full at the time, with softball games in progress at the rear of the building, people playing basketball on the outdoor courts and a group of Girl Scouts planting flowers in the front of the building.
