The First Baptist Church of Westfield hosted a Community Dessert Competition on Saturday, May 2, from 2 – 4 p.m. The competition drew competitors from throughout the community.
The Grand Prize, which was sponsored by Amuse, the new French bistro on Elm Street, went to Beth Frantz whose pie wowed nearly everyone. Unsurprisingly, Beth was also the winner of the pie category.
The cake category was won by Natasha Klochkova, whose incredibly complex entry ensured her victory. Natasha’s prize was a gift card to Xocolatz.
The Araujo family dominated the competition with two wins. Hilary Araujo won the cookie category with a brownie recipe that ensured her claim to the Ahrre’s Coffee gift card.
Hilary’s husband Luis Araujo wowed spectators with a display of showmanship as he crafted Flaming Banana’s Foster for each judge and visitor. Luis’ display won him first place in the ‘other’ category which was sponsored by Bovella’s Pastry Shoppe.
The competition is raised funds for the church’s Young Adult Ministries program and plans to use the funds to scholarship participants who wish to go on an educational service project trip. Participants will be traveling to Rhode Island to work with a Migrant Worker Center and participate in several educational acitvities.
