Volunteers at Congregation Beth Israel in Scotch Plains prepared sandwiches for Plainfield’s Second Street Youth Center (SSYC) on Wednesday, October 3. The synagogue’s Social Action committee organizes monthly sandwich-making sessions for volunteers of all ages to provide healthy lunches and after-school snacks for school-age participants in SSYC’s programs. The Second Street Youth Center Foundation is a multipurpose non-profit organization that provides educational, vocational, cultural and recreational activities for youth and adults in the Plainfield community.
Congregation Beth Israel’s Social Action committee also delivers meals once a month to homebound elderly in the Scotch Plains area through Mobile Meals of Westfield. Throughout the year, the Social Action committee organizes additional community outreach projects, including: building homes through Habitat for Humanity; collecting winter coats through the Jersey Cares Coat Drive; and putting on an intergenerational talent show in a nearby nursing home.
