WESTFIELD, NJ — People are advised to stay on marked paths and keep pets close at parks where deer hunts are scheduled to begin this week.

The bow hunts are set to start Monday, according to the county’s schedule, which states that the hunts are happening on weekdays until Feb. 19. Hunts in Westfield had been approved for Brightwood Park and a section of Tamaques Park.

“Please stay on designated Trails and keep dogs leashed,” the county advised on its website.

In November, the Westfield Town Council approved the municipality’s participation in the countywide hunt.

The winter bow-season also includes hunts in the following locations near to Westfield, according to the county:

  • Cedar Brook Park
  • Green Brook Park
  • Lenape Park
  • Ash Brook Reservation
  • Oak Ridge Park
  • Passaic River Park
  • Hawk Rise Sanctuary and Linden Municipal Landfill
  • Watchung Reservation – (21 days: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday only)
  • Elizabeth River Park
  • Nomahegan Park
  • Galloping Hill Golf Course
  • Reeves Reed Arboretum
  • Hidden Valley Park
  • Linden Airport
  • Rahway River Parkway (Springfield and Clark)

Countywide, a shotgun hunt is set to run in three locations on Mondays only, beginning today through Feb. 1, with a Wednesday rain date. Those are set for the following areas, according to the program guidelines:

  • Watchung Reservation
  • Ash Brook Reservation
  • Hawk Rise Sanctuary and Linden Municipal Landfill

Deer harvested in the bow hunt are to be field-dressed and the entrails bagged and removed by the hunters, according to the program guidelines.

Deer harvested in the shotgun hunt will be taken to a site where hunters will eviscerate the deer, the program guide says.

Venison not being kept by the volunteer hunters for personal consumption is being donated to the Community FoodBank of NJ for distribution to the needy and homeless throughout the county, the program says.
