WESTFELD, NJ — Elm Street was open to through traffic in Downtown Westfield Tuesday morning as crews continued the work of demolishing Westfield’s Trader Joe’s that began on Friday. Although the sidewalk was blocked off on Elm Street adjacent to the site, a temporary walkway was set up so that pedestrians could safely pass.

Westfield police continue to secure the building until its contents can be safely removed by Trader Joe’s. That will likely happen on Wednesday, Westfield Construction Official Steve Freedman said on Friday. He estimated that rebuilding the grocery store could take about eight months.

Trader Joe’s has said that it intends to reopen at that location.
