After a successful start to the fall indoor swim season, the Westfield Area YMCA Devilfish swim team held a time trial meet for their swimmers.
The two-day meet, held on Oct. 3 and 4 at the Westfield YMCA, was broken out by age group with the 12 and under swimmers racing in three different sessions on Saturday and the 13 and over swimmers racing in two different sessions on Sunday in order to further limit the number of people present at the pool at one time.
The swimmers were socially distanced with masks on in the gym until it was their time to swim. After each heat the swimmers left the pool deck before the next set of swimmers came out. With just enough officials and timers to make this an official meet, following all safety protocols, the Devilfish were able to give the swimmers their first chance at racing since the season was abruptly cut short due to COVID-19 last March.
Although there were no spectators allowed, a live stream allowed family members to watch from home. While this meet was unlike those in the past, the kids were happy to be back racing, with many best times achieved, and the parents were happy to see their kids in the pool even if they couldn’t watch in person.
Thank you to all the coaches and parent volunteers for helping to make this meet a success. We look forward to more racing this season.
