WESTFIELD, NJ — After hot weekend, the National Weather Service issued another excessive heat warning for the area Monday morning lasting until 8 p.m. Monday night. The high Monday was expected to reach 98 degrees Fahrenheit.

The National Weather Service also issued a code orange air quality alert, which means that air pollution concentrations within the region may become unhealthy for sensitive groups, including children; people with asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases; and the elderly. The effects of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous activity or exercise outdoors, according to the service.

PSE&G said in a press release that it was prepared to meet the demand for additional power during these excessively hot days and utility crews are ready to respond to service interruptions, should they occur.

“If weather predictions hold, our system will be tested during the next two weeks,” said John Latka, PSE&G’s senior vice president for electric and gas. “Our teams in electric and appliance services will be busy and we ask customers for their patience as we respond to all requests as safely and quickly as possible.”

To report power outages, call PSE&G’s Customer Service line at 1-800-436-PSEG. Also, customers can report outages by logging into their PSE&G account online or by texting “OUT” to 4PSEG (47734). The utility’s mobile-friendly website includes an Outage Map that is updated every 15 minutes and displays the location and status of power outages in PSE&G’s service area.

On Friday, the town of Westfield advised residents to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity and check on any neighbors in need.

“Please do not leave children or pets unattended in a car,” the town wrote in its announcement about the heat on Facebook.
