FANWOOD, NJ  Eugene Gillespie, owner of the Blackthorn Irish Pub in Kenilworth, who holds the liquor license of the former Sun Tavern (15 South Ave.) in Fanwood, has placed the license for sale.

Gillespie, a native of County Mayo, posted the offer on Blackthorn's Facebook page on Christmas Eve. The license is a Plenary Retail Consumption License (“33”), which authorizes the sale of alcoholic beverages for consumption on premises by the glass or other open receptacle. It also allows the sale of alcoholic beverages in original containers for consumption off premises.

Gillespie bought the Sun Tavern license in 2014, but does not own the building itself. The property was sold for $1.345 million at auction on Oct. 8, 2014, to buyers Rohit Gera and Bony Singh of Edison, who outbid the Blackthorn owner and several others. The 12,400 sq. ft. building near the intersection of South Ave. and Terrill Road has stood empty for more than a year.

Currently, Fanwood does not have an operating bar/restaurant. Oh' Brian's Pourhouse closed in Feb. 2015, and its license has been the object of legal battles between former partners Sean Flannery and Brian Walter. (Despite this fact, website Roadsnacks.net recently ranked the borough as the 94th drunkest town in New Jersey.)

The A&P held a license to sell beer, but the supermarket closed on Nov. 17. Fanwood Liquors (61 South Ave.) is the only location in the borough that is authorized to sell alcohol at the moment.

Although the budget contains much that I ...

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
