UNION, NJ — A car crash on the Garden State Parkway North Tuesday afternoon took the life of an elderly woman, according to authorities.

The woman crashed her car into the toll booth barriers at lanes 4 and 5 after hitting two other vehicles around 2:30 Tuesday afternoon. The woman was trapped in the vehicle as it caught fire. According to Union Fire Battalion Chief Tom Gourlay, Union police officer Michael Cocca arrived first on the scene and pulled the woman from the car shortly before firefighters arrived.

Officer Cocca and State Police officers moved the victim away from the accident scene and began CPR. She was later pronounced dead at Newark Beth Israel hospital. Union's Emergency Medical Unit transported one other patient to Overlook Hospital with minor injuries. 

One other patient refused medical aid.
