SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — Fire gutted a two-story home on Crestwood Road near North Avenue Thursday evening. As of 8:45 p.m., the fire was still active, with firefighters from Scotch Plains, Fanwood, Westfield, Mountainside, Clark and Berkeley Heights working to bring the blaze under control.

No one was home when the fire broke out, according to Scotch Plains Fire Chief John Lestarchick, and so far no firefighters were injured. A woman who lived in the home told TAPinto that her dog had died in the fire.

The fire department responded to multiple calls reporting the fire at about 7:30 p.m., according to Lestarchick.

“It was just such a big house and so much fire on arrival, there was nothing we could do with it,” Lestarchick said.
