ELIZABETH, NJ – Special Operations Firefighters were called to a partially collapsed house on the 500 block of Adams Avenue Wednesday afternoon.
“Construction officers received a phone call that bricks were flying off the foundation,” explained Deputy Chief Lathey Wirkus. “They found the foundation is total disarray.”
Elizabeth firefighters, along with Union Township Squad 41, were working to build supports for the house to hold it in place until an outside contractor could come to tear the building down.
“We mutually work with the Union Squad and bring them in on a larger scale so things go very smoothly," explained Wirkus.
The home had been unoccupied for a number of years, although it had recently been sold.
“The house has been abandoned for a number of years,” said a neighbor. “I have been here 14 years, and I don’t think anyone has been here.”
