SOMERVILLE, NJ — The Westfield High School varsity football team remains undefeated with Friday's 23-6 win over Immaculata, improving to 7-0 this season and 32 straight wins. The Spartans are now 4-3 on the season.
The Blue Devils scored first with a 14-yard touchdown run by Juandre House in the first quarter to take the lead 6-0. Later in the second quarter, Westfield's powerful ground game again moved the ball well and deep into Spartan territory. The drive finished with a 1 yard run by Jake Vall-Llobera. Hank Shapiro connected with Emmit Smith for a successful 2-point conversion to take 14-0, ending the first half.
The Spartans adjusted to stop the run and Westfield turned to the air with a touchdown pass from Shapiro to Steve Barden to go up 21-0 in the fourth quarter. After a series of punts by both teams, the Spartans offense clicked and put together a solid drive capped off by a Nate Barnett 2 yard touchdown run that put the Spartans on the board.
Late in the game the Spartans were caught in their own end zone for a 2-point safety.
Immaculata returns to action next Friday, visiting the Montgomery Cougars. Westfield will play Scotch Plains-Fanwood next on Saturday, Nov. 4, at Kehler Stadium.
