WESTFIELD, NJ — Westfield’s town council observed a moment of silence during Tuesday night’s meeting after Acting Mayor JoAnn Neylan announced that former Mayor Allen Chin had passed away.
Chin, who was 80 years old, died on April 11. Chin served as town councilman from 1974 to 1977 and as mayor from 1979 to 1982. Soon after his term, he was appointed commissioner of the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority for the town of Westfield, a volunteer position that he continued to fill until his death.
According to his obituary, Chin was named Unico's 1982 Man of the Year (Westfield chapter), Westfield Jaycees President (1971-72) and their Man of the Year (1967-68). He was instrumental in relaunching the Westfield Police Athletic League (PAL) in the mid 1970s and later served as a board member and president. He also coached Westfield youth soccer and baseball teams and was a proud member of First Baptist Church of Westfield.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, at First Baptist Church, 170 Elm St., Westfield, with interment to follow immediately afterwards at Fairview Cemetery.
