Garland Jeffreys and His Band Rock the JCC March 18

Rocker Garland Jeffreys will bring his lyrical and musical talents to the JCC March 18.

Scotch Plains, NJ — Iconic rocker Garland Jeffreys will bring his lyrical and musical talents to the Jewish Community Center of Central New Jersey in Scotch Plains on Saturday, March 18 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 and can be purchased at or by calling 908-889-8800 x253.  The concert is part of the ongoing Split Level Concert Series that highlights critically acclaimed singer-songwriters in a uniquely intimate setting.

With a brand new album scheduled to drop this spring and a feature documentary in progress, the legendary Jeffreys continues to defy expectations. It’s impossible to classify Jeffreys’ music into neat little boxes: his thoughtful, passionate songs mix new wave, soul, reggae, garage rock, doo-wop and Latin influences to create a deeply personal hybrid that reflects his own multi-ethnic roots.

A New York native and veteran of the fertile mid-70s and early 80s scene that included peers like Bruce Springsteen, Lou Reed, Graham Parker, Southside Johnny, Mink DeVille and Phoebe Snow, Jeffreys’ passionate tunes range from streetwise urban-romantic love songs to penetrating social critiques tackling issues of race in America, as can be heard on his 1992 album Don't Call Me Buckwheat.  The LP has been called “one of the most important, hard-hitting records since Marvin Gaye's masterpiece 'What's Going On.'"

After a nearly 15 year hiatus, Jeffreys recently came roaring back into the spotlight with 2011’s The King of In Between.

“As good a classic roots rock record as you’re going to hear from anybody” (NPR), the album earned raves and led to his second appearance on David Letterman as well as sharing the stage with pals Bruce Springsteen and Levon Helm. The experience fueled a creative revitalization for Jeffreys, whose ebullient, late-stage creative energy colors every note of his last release, 2013's Truth Serum.

Singer/songwriter Cariad Harmon, a London native now based in Nashville, will open the show.

The JCC of Central New Jersey is located at 1391 Martine Avenue in Scotch Plains. The JCC of Central New Jersey is a constituent agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest NJ, United Way of Greater Union County and the Westfield United Fund. Financial assistance is available for membership and various programs.
