GARWOOD, NJ — An 81-year-old borough woman died when she was hit by the driver of an SUV Wednesday evening, police said.

Officers found Catherine Flint lying face down in the roadway on Walnut Street near the intersection of Second Avenue at about 6:15 p.m., Police Chief Jim Wright said in a statement.

“A black SUV heading southbound on Walnut Street struck the pedestrian who was crossing Walnut Street,” Wright said. “Officers on scene gave first aid until the Garwood First Aid Squad and a paramedic arrived.”

Flint was pronounced dead on the scene, he said.

The driver, a 61-year-old woman from Westfield, was in the process of calling 911 when police arrived, Wright said. She remained on the scene and is cooperating with the investigation, he said.

“The preliminary investigation suggests that neither speed nor alcohol were contributing factors,” Wright said.

Anyone with information that can further the investigation is asked to contact Capt. Douglas Stoffer at 908-789-2212 or email him at d-stoffer@garwood.org.
