WESTFIELD, NJ — Mackenzi Higgins and Angela Nazzaro, members of Girl Scout Troop 40861 out of Westfield High School, presented their plan to install bat boxes in the Dunham Avenue Bird Sanctuary to Westfield’s town council recently.
The project, which will help the girls earn the Girl Scouts Silver Award, is designed to help bats and raise awareness about how the animals have been disappearing, they said.
“We both love animals,” Nazzaro told the council, which approved the project that night. The DPW will assist the them with putting poles in the ground, Town Administrator Jim Gildea said.
The council applauded the Scouts, and Councilman David Contract noted that bats eat mosquitos.
“It’s a great place for this,” Gildea said. “At the bird sanctuary we’ve done four or five Eagle Scout projects over the years. This is another addition to that nice piece of town property.”
