WESTFIELD, NJ — The No. 3 seeded Westfield High School girls varsity basketball team will go up against No. 1 seed The Patrick School Friday in the Union County Tournament final at Kean University Friday after defeating New Providence, 39-33, Wednesday.
“The girls have been preparing all season,” head coach Liz McKeon said. “We have four losses: two to The Patrick School and two to New Providence.”
The last time the Lady Blue Devils played The Patrick School, they lost by just two points.
“We were able to avenge our losses against New Providence and we want to do the same thing against The Patrick School,” McKeon said.
She noted that The Patrick School is a very talented team with a number of girls moving on to play Division I basketball.
“We will need to contain their shooters and try and slow down their fast-paced play,” she said. “Our strengths are our heart and our mental toughness. It doesn't hurt to have balanced scoring and a team that plays like a team.”
Earlier that evening, the junior varsity team will play for the Union County title against Cranford at 6 p.m., also at Kean.
“Our JV team is having a great year with only one loss in the county, and that is to Cranford,” McKeon said. “The two teams split on the season so it will be a battle for the County Championship.”
