After an intense evening of testing, Golda Och Academy took home the first place trophy at the Math League Elementary School Competition held at Far Hills Country Day School on Dec. 9. Six schools competed in the event, which consisted of four tests: three individual tests on computation, word problems and various other types of skills, along with one team test per grade. Groups of one to four students competed together for the team test.
Currently, GOA’s math league consists of 19 students in grades 3-5 run by coaches Kelly Maiello, math enrichment teacher, and Josh Allen, math teacher. The group meets twice a week during lunch/recess as well as after school on Tuesdays.
The team had been working so hard,” said Maiello, “that it was so exciting to finally reach this point. They felt an overwhelming sense of school spirit and pride.”
Allen was also proud of the team’s performance, stressing their focus and dedication. “They worked hard at practices and worked really hard at the competition,” said Allen. “Most importantly, they had fun. Winning is just a great benefit to having a good time with math.”
In addition to the team win, individual honors were also given out to participants. Third grade awards went to Shoshie Newman (8th place), Joseph Sorkin (6th), Adam Kritzer (5th) and Andrew Talpins (3rd). Representing the fourth grade was Liam Robbins who took home the 3rd place award, while fifth-grade winners included David Heimowitz (6th), Josh Goldberg (4th), Eli Berman (3rd) and Ilan Brauns (2nd). Performance at the Far Hills competition also qualified a number of students for the state competition in April including Andrew Talpins, Liam Robbins, Ilan Brauns, Eli Berman, Josh Goldberg, David Heimowitz, Sarah Farbiarz, Josh Kaufman and Nathan Scherzer.
“We are absolutely ecstatic about the incredible achievement of the Lower School Math League team and their coaches, Ms. Kelly Maiello and Mr. Josh Allen,” said Carrie Siegel, principal of the Wilf Lower School Campus at GOA. “The students’ hard work and preparation truly paid off in their incredible results at their first competition of the 2014-2015 academic year. In addition to the individual honors earned, winning first place overall has the entire Lower School community beaming with pride.”
