The “Westfield Green Team” will host a special, interactive booth at the annual Spring Fling event, to be held on Sunday, May 1, to promote the team’s new recycling initiative, “Reduce, Re-use, Recycle.” Visitors to the booth will have the opportunity to spin a prize wheel in order to win Green Team logo items, including re-usable tote bags and coloring books, and children can dig in and get their hands dirty at the flower planting station.
The Green Team was established a year ago by the Westfield Town Council and is comprised of elected officials, municipal staff, members of community boards and commissions and local residents. The team’s mission is to lead and coordinate local initiatives and actions that will lead to a “Sustainable Jersey Municipal Certification,” a state designation that helps communities improve efficiency, cut waste and stimulate its local economy. According to Team Chairman William Heinbokel, the team is currently working on encouraging and expanding recycling efforts in Westfield, including reducing recyclable waste at town parks and recreational facilities.
“Spring Fling affords us the opportunity to communicate with Westfield residents as to the individual efforts that each resident can undertake in promoting recycling not only in their homes, but also on a larger scale that will help all of Westfield enjoy a clean and green, more sustainable environment,” said Heinbokel.
Green Team members will be on hand to answer the public’s questions, and will be assisted by students from environmental clubs at Westfield High School and the intermediate schools.
