PLAINFIELD, NJ — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting that took place in Plainfield on Thursday afternoon, acting Union County Prosecutor Grace H. Park announced. The victim has been identified as 31-year-old Wilson Valdez of Plainfield. 

Plainfield Police Division units rushed to the 600 block of Berckman Street on a report of a shooting shortly after 2:30 p.m. Valdez, who had been working in a convenience store at the time of the incident, was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.  
According to a report by News 12 NJ, Valdez was shot in the chest as he tried to protect a little girl from gunfire. He left behind a girlfriend and an 8-year-old son. Two suspects were later captured.
 
The death of Valdez remains under joint investigation by the Union County Homicide Task Force and the Plainfield Police Division.
