Once you’ve purchased a new home, it’s time to take charge of your move. Start by following this moving checklist. It will help you stay on track and be organized come moving day!
Create a moving file — place all papers related to your move in this file. Know where it is at all times.
Take a photograph or create a video log of each room. It can be useful for making a family log and useful for insurance purposes should anything be broken.
Make a list of everyone you need to notify about your move: friends, professionals, creditors, subscriptions, etc.
Contact all medical professionals who have your records. Request referrals to your new location.
Locate all motor vehicle registration and licensing documents.
Contact utility and related companies:
- Gas, electric, oil, water, telephone, waste management for service disconnect/connect at your old and new addresses.
- Remember to keep phone and utilities connected at your current home throughout moving day.
- Notify the post office and get change-of-address forms. Notify magazines to which you subscribe. Note: fill out a change-of-address form for each person receiving mail at your address.
Check homeowner’s insurance policies to see if moving is covered. Frequently an additional policy to cover temporary added liability is advised.
Plan for the transfer of pets (or have someone watch them during moving day).
Collect important papers, put in a safe place (insurance, will, deeds, stocks, etc.).
Arrange for closing or transfer of bank accounts and open new accounts in new location. Account for all outstanding deposits and checks.
Arrange for cable/satellite TV disconnection. Your local service provider can help you with phone, Internet, cable, or satellite service for your new home, if not provided.
Gather medicines and important papers for the car trip.
Keep your moving file in a safe place to locate phone numbers, moving documents, and home inventory.
