CLARK, NJ — After 67 years, Bernie’s Westbrant Auto Parts and Repairs will permanently close its doors on July 17, 2020.  The iconic Clark business has anchored the intersection of Westfield Avenue and Brant Ave since founder Bernie Gittleman started the business with his wife in 1952.

“Bernie’s has been my heart and soul throughout my entire life,” current owner Robert Gittleman said. “I joined my mom and dad in 1975 and it was a gift to work alongside them for so many years. Integrity, honesty, hard work and education were the cornerstones of our business.  I will truly miss our loyal customers in Clark and surrounding towns who have contributed so much to our long-term success.”

According to Gittleman, a long-rumored new CVS Pharmacy will be built on the Bernie’s site.

Customers are being directed to Frank’s Auto Repair & Auto Body, Inc. located close by at 56 S. Martine Ave in Fanwood.  Bernie’s customers are asked to call Frank’s at 908-322-4075 for future car care needs.

“I really trust Frank and Tracy will provide the quality customer service and superior workmanship Bernie’s customers demand and have grown to expect over the years,” the retiring Gittleman said.

Bernie’s garage will close to repairs on June 19, 2020.  The parts store will remain open until July 17, 2020.  Parts, accessories, equipment, tools, cars and trucks, household items and antiques will be sold at drastically discounted prices during the final days.

“I leave with a tear in my eye,” Gittleman said, “but I know the time is right for me to go. I’m reminded of a line in the song Closing Time, ‘every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.’ It’s time for my new beginning.”
