It was clearly obvious, while shopping at Tiffany Natural Pharmacy in Westfield, that most of the folks wandering the aisles were searching for that magic pill to cure them of their flu-like symptoms. Those flu-like symptoms include: fever, chills and cold sweats, coughs, nasal congestion, headaches, muscle aches, and extreme malaise.
Heeding shoppers, because of his cough, obvious nasal congestion, and general malaise, Mel Endick of Scotch Plains, stopped to check with proprietor and compounding pharmacist Brian Pinto about what-to-do?”
“I definitely do not want the flu shot,” said Endick,“ echoing the sentiments of so many others, “I want to try over-the-counter medication that has met with success.”
For Endick, Pinto recommended, BOIRON Oscillococcinum which “Temporarily relieves flu-like symptoms such as fatigue, headache, chills and fever.”

“The United States is about halfway through the flu season, which is shaping up to be worse than average, and a bad one for the elderly,” said Thomas Friden, director of the Federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported in the Star Ledger and other newspapers. “New figures from the CDC show the flu epidemic is continuing with widespread activity in all states but Tennessee and Hawaii.”
“Two drugs--Tamiflu and Relenza--may cut the severity, but must be started within 48 hours of first symptoms to do much good,” echoed Dr. David Worth of Union, and compounding pharmacist Brian Pinto.
“Because of the severity of the illness, and shortage of products, we are compounding the medication at Tiffany Natural Pharmacy,” he adds.
At Robinson’s Drug and Compounding Center in Mendham, Proprietor and Pharmacist John Kim, who is affiliated with Tiffany Natural Pharmacy, says, “Worried about the Flu? We’re recommending the following to boost your immune system.”
1. Vitamin D 3 10,000 IU
2. Esberitox
3. Sambucol (Elderberry)
4.  Oscillococcinum
5.  Vitamin C
6.  X-Clear Nasal Spray
Of course, there are other home remedies that have been known to make a difference.
* Remember to wash your hands.
* Soothe your throat and miserable feeling with a hearty bowl of Chicken Soup.
* Keep yourself hydrated. Drink lots of fluids.
* Apply Vicks Vapor Rub on your neck, chest, and under your nose.
* Take: Aspirin, Tylenol, Aleve or Advil for your aches, pains, and fever.
* Plug in your Vaporizer as needed.
* Get lots of bed-rest.
* If your temperature rises above 100 degrees, please call your doctor, or your registered compounding pharmacist.
For the adventurous soul who believe in “Old Wives Tales, (and please don’t laugh...because it really works), get yourself a pair of socks you don’t love. Open your jar of Vicks Vapor
Rub, and lavishly spread it over the soles of your feet. Don a pair of socks, and get into bed and rest. You’ll be surprised at how much better you’ll feel in the morning
