Alisa Korunow and Marcia Zimmermann are semifinalists for the 2017 American Quilter’s Society AQS QuiltWeek® – Fall Paducah, Kentucky to be held Sept. 13 – 16, Schroeder Expo & Carroll Convention Center in Paducah, Kentucky.

Alisa, a Westfield resident, and Marcia of Scotch Plains have been chosen to display their quilt, WANDERLUST, along with 369 others in this 1st Annual contest. Three quilting authorities will judge this elite group, awarding first-, second-, and third-place prizes in 15 categories, along with Judges’ Recognition. Seven overall awards will be decided by public vote from among the fifteen 1st Place quilts.

Alisa and Marcia designed the King sized quilt to include traditional piecing, hand applique, three dimensional fabric flowers, paper piecing and hand quilting.  After working on WANDERLUST for the past year, this is the pair’s first experience in international competition although they have won numerous ribbons for their work on the local level. Both are members of the Harvest Quilters of Central New Jersey where they serve as raffle quilt chairs.

Originally from Mountain Lakes, NJ, Alisa a crafter and needle worker since childhood began quilting with the birth of her second child.  A graduate of Rutgers University, the retail sales manager has three adult children with husband John. “We decided to explore techniques new to us and to challenge ourselves to take our quilting to the next level and WANDERLUST was the result,” said Alisa.

Kean University alum Marcia started sewing and quilting while growing up in Scotch Plains. A designer, who works in an antique shop, Marcia and husband Tom are the parents of five adult children.  “Working and collaborating with Alisa, who brought her own unique perspective and talents to the project, was the most enjoyable part of this journey,” said Marcia.

Winners will be announced at the AQS Winners Showcase, which takes place at the Walker Hall Events Center in Paducah on Friday, September 15. Cash awards totaling $121,250 will be granted, including $20,000 for the Best of Show; $11,000 for the Best Wall Quilt; $10,000 for 1st Place Overall; $9,000 for 2nd Place Overall; $8,000 for 3rd Place Overall; $7,000 for 4th Place Overall; and $6,000 for 5th Place Overall. Regardless of how WANDERLUST places in the final judging, all semi-finalists’ quilts will be displayed at the show, which is expected to draw more than 30,000 people.

The American Quilter’s Society hosts several shows annually, each with its own quilt contest. Besides the Paducah, Kentucky show, AQS hosts prestigious shows in Daytona Beach, Florida; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; Grand Rapids, Michigan; and Des Moines, Iowa.
