My name is David Sexton and I’m running for the Westfield Board of Education.

If you didn’t get a chance to attend last week’s Meet the Candidates Night hosted by the League of Women’s Voters and the Westfield PTC, you really missed something.

I was encouraged by how many of you came out on a cold rainy night to talk about how to keep Westfield schools thriving. I was encouraged to see the board of education members in the audience. It made me glad to have chosen to run for the board of education in a town where so many people devote their time and energy to making the schools the wonderful place that they are.

I hope that the letters I’ve published have told you about the kind of board member that I would make. I hope my words at the Meet the Candidates night gave you a sense of how much I care about the Westfield schools. I hope to get a chance to meet and talk to as many of you as I can in the coming weeks to hear your thoughts about the schools also.

Hopefully you’ll see me at the train station, or on the corner in town. I’ll have my sign so you’ll know who I am. I’d encourage you to come up and say hi. I’d love to talk to you about our schools.

I hope I can convince you that my experience as a teacher, as a technologist in financial services and as a writer for local and regional publications will make me a good candidate. I hope I can share my years studying for an M.A. in English Literature and an M.S. in information systems prepared me for the complexities of the job. I hope my enthusiasm for our schools will leave you with no doubt that I intend to do my best for the Westfield schools.

Please consider voting for me, David Sexton, on November 4th for Westfield Board of Education. You’ll see me out in town that day encouraging you to vote. You’ll see my name down in row 4 on the ballot. I hope you’ll select me as one of the three new board of education members.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
