As mayor of Westfield, I do not speak publicly on national issues on which I cannot speak with one voice for the people of Westfield. On the topics of violence, bigotry, and racism, I can speak with one voice. What this country witnessed on Saturday in Charlottesville, Virginia is unacceptable and indefensible.
Yesterday's senseless violence, fueled by racism, ignorance and hatred, is deeply troubling. Westfield stands in solidarity with the residents of Charlottesville and those killed and injured during Yesterday's riot, including two Virginia State Troopers responding to the chaos.
The mayor of Charlottesville, Michael Signer, has been quoted as saying that "people will react to the darkness with a lot more light." I know that the residents of Westfield will continue to spread the light.
