Musical Club of Westfield to Host Free Concert April 12

The public is invited on Wednesday, April 12, to the next in a series of free concerts given by members of the Musical Club of Westfield. The performance will be held at the First Baptist Church of Westfield, 170 Elm St. and begins at 1:30 pm.

Mezzo-soprano Drude Sparre Crane will open the program with three arias from American opera: “Augusta’s Aria” from The Ballad of Baby Doe, composed by Douglas Moore,

“Lullaby” from Menotti’s The Counsul, and “What a Movie” from Leonard Bernstein’s Trouble in Tahiti. Mrs. Crane will be accompanied by Guest Artist Ron Thayer, piano.

The second artist on the program is pianist John Blasdale. Mr. Blasdale will perform Beethoven’s Sonata 31 in A-flat Major, Op. 110.

Helen Bartolick, flute, and David Bower, piano, will conclude the concert with Flute Concertino in D-Major, Op. 107 by composer Cécile Chaminade. This will be followed by Wilhelm Popp’s La Chasse (Gallop Brillante for Flute and Piano), Op. 250, No.6.

The performance is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served after the program at a reception to meet the performers. The Musical Club of Westfield, now in its 101st season, offers scholarships to promising young musicians who are pursuing a musical education. Membership in the club is open to anyone who is interested in music.
