WESTFIELD, NJ — Brunella Portuguese Coffee & Deli at 615 South Ave. West (formerly the Early Bird bakery) held a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday to celebrate the restaurant’s new ownership and name.
Debora and Jimmy Viana and their daughter Brunah Oliveira (for whom the shop is named) took over from its former owners in November and have since put their own twists on the menu.
“We have a passion for food,” said Deborah Viana, who still works as a flight attendant traveling around the world when she’s not at the café. “Jimmy was always saying, ‘Debora, why don’t we own a bakery or a café?’”
Brunella offers Portuguese and Brazilian foods, such as empanadas, chourizo sandwiches and Brazilian hot dogs (with Brazilian meat sauce and potato sticks) and pastries including custard cups and Portuguese croissants, as well as American staples including breakfast sandwiches, salads, burgers and cupcakes.
Business so far has been good, Viana said.
“I love it,” she said. “We have been very busy.”
