SCOTCH PLAINS, NJ — More than $35,000 was raised for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation last week at Play for P.I.N.K., a golf tournament, luncheon and fundraiser held at Shackamaxon Country Club.

The event was co-chaired by Westfield residents Beth Hornstein and Shari Berman.

“This was my 14th year of volunteering for Play for P.I.N.K.,” Hornstein said. “The reason I keep coming back is everyone knows someone that is affected by this cancer —  a mother, sister, cousin or a friend. I know together we can make a difference. The energy that fills the room with people dressed in pink makes it an amazing day.”

Tami Bowling, a Scotch Plains mom of two, was presented with the 2017 Humanitarian Award during the luncheon. Bowling raised $34,000 for metastatic breast cancer last year. She told the story of how she was diagnosed and how she lives each day to the fullest.

“I have coined a new term, ‘The Cancer Clarity,’ which is the crystal-clear realization of what is important in life. My personal mantra is, ‘Faith. Hope. Love,’” Bowling said. “These are three words I can always repeat and I know if I have those in my life, I am happy.”

Bowling has not told her young daughters about her diagnosis.

“The hardest part about living with metastatic cancer is the uncertainty of the future,” she told the crowd. “I want to leave you with a quote from my favorite philosopher — my dad. He always told me that life is 10 percent of what happens to you and 90 percent how you react to it. I stay strong for my children. I strive to keep my faith stronger than my fear and I focus on loving and living in the present.”

RonWeiss, M.D., founder of Ethos Health, gave the keynote speech.
