WESTFIELD, NJ – Westfield is set to help celebrate New Jersey’s 350th anniversary this year when it hosts Union County’s only official NJ350 Pop-Up Shop, open from July 8-12.

The shop, which will be located at 200 Central Ave., is one of 16 temporary stores offering Jerseyana items in 14 selected communities throughout the Garden State in 2014.

Hours of operation are from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. most days, with Westfield’s store staying open on July 8 through the end of the evening’s Sweet Sounds Downtown Jazz Festival at 9 p.m. (Raindate July 9).)

Westfield’s shop will feature not only New Jersey memorabilia, t-shirts, games, mugs, books about the state and items from the Westfield Historical Society but unique products from local businesses, as well.

“We have surveyed some of our businesses to find Westfield-specific items,” said Sherry Cronin, executive director of the Downtown Westfield Corporation.

Among the featured displays from local merchants are The Farmhouse Store’s Westfield and New Jersey-centric home goods and jewelry, Le Bain Boutique’s bath and body creations, Patricia & Paul’s balsamics and olive oils, Sole’s own brand of Italian shoes and The Town Book Store’s selection of books on Westfield and books by local writers.

The Westfield pop-up shop will be run by the Downtown Westfield Corporation staff and volunteers.

Cronin noted that a second pop-up shop will appear in Westfield when Christina’s Closet opens temporarily at 221 North Ave. East, the former home of Bath Junkie, for two weeks in July. Cronin recalled Westfield having pop-up shops for Halloween in the past but said these two are the first since those.

“The timing works out, and there’s willingness on the part of the landlord,” she said.

The NJ350 Pop-Up Shops is made possible by Main Street New Jersey, the NJ Department of Community Affairs and the NJ Historical Commission. The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation and the Crossroads of the American Revolution National History Area are listed as sponsors on the NJ350 website.

New Jersey got its start in 1664 as a royal gift from Charles II of England to his brother James, Duke of York. James then gave the land to two noblemen, Sir George Cateret and John Lord Berkeley.

The celebration of New Jersey’s 350th year is built around the themes of innovation, diversity and liberty. It pays tribute to the state’s rich past, its vibrant population and the many inventions the state has given the world, from Edison’s light bulb to Atlantic City’s boardwalk. Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
