UNION, NJ — New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials announced Friday that Route 22 westbound will be closed and detoured in Union on Friday evening beginning at 9 p.m. for emergency bridge deck repairs.

The emergency work is part of a $2 million bridge deck replacement project expected to be completed in the spring of 2016, the NJDOT said. This section of the bridge work was scheduled to be reconstructed in the next phase of the project, but the DOT said that deterioration of the roadway made emergency repairs necessary now.

Starting at 9 p.m. Friday, Jan. 8, until 7 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, NJDOT’s contractor Power Concrete, Co. Inc., plans to close Route 22 westbound in the vicinity of Burke Parkway to perform emergency bridge deck repairs. Route 22 eastbound will not be affected, officials said.

  • From Caldwell Avenue, motorists will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

Passenger Vehicles Detour from the Garden State Parkway South

  • Motorists from the Garden State Parkway South going to Route 22 westbound in Union will be directed to the Morris Avenue/Route 82 eastbound ramp and make a left onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound.
  • From Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound motorists will be directed to make a left onto Caldwell Avenue.
  • From Caldwell Avenue, motorists will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

Truck and Bus Detour from Route 22 westbound

  • Trucks traveling westbound on Route 22 in Union will be directed onto Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound ramp.
  • From Morris Avenue/Route 82 westbound trucks will be directed to make a left onto Meisel Avenue/Route 124.
  • Trucks will continue on Meisel Avenue/Route 124 and stay right as the road splits. Meisel Avenue will turn into South Springfield Avenue/CR577.
  • From South Springfield Avenue/CR577, trucks will be directed back onto Route 22 westbound.

The NJDOT recommended that drivers plan their trips accordingly and prepare for delays in the region.

The bridge deck replacement project is being constructed in stages, beginning with the new deck and parapets, the NJDOT said. Each stage is re-constructing approximately one-third of the bridge deck at a time. The project includes milling and paving the bridge approaches and reconstructing the guide rail, sidewalk and curb. As the project progresses, NJDOT said it will will provide information before any closures or detours are implemented.

NJDOT is using Variable Message Signs to provide advance notification to motorists of traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The exact timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Check the NJDOT’s traffic information website http://www.511nj.org for real-time travel information. Follow them on Twitter @NJDOT_info.

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
