WESTFIELD, NJ — An 87-year old Scotch Plains man died Friday afternoon after he was struck while crossing West South Avenue at the intersection of North Scotch Plains Avenue, police said.

The victim’s name has not been released. No charges have been filed against the driver at this time, police said.

Westfield Police Chief Christopher Battiloro said in a press release that the pedestrian was struck by a vehicle traveling west on West South Avenue at about 12:52 p.m. The man was conscious and alert upon police arrival at the scene, but had sustained significant injuries, he said.

He was transported to University Hospital in Newark by the Westfield Rescue Squad and Atlantic Health System paramedics, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries, police said.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Westfield Police Department’s Crash Investigation Unit, assisted by the Union County Police Department’s Crash Scene Analysis Team, police said.
