UNION, NJ — Service on the Raritan Valley train line was suspended Friday in both directions between Newark Penn Station and Cranford and also between Raritan and High Bridge due to a freight train derailment near Union Station.

The derailment took place at about 2:15 p.m. Friday afternoon.

According to Township of Union business administrator, the freight train contained 141 cars, eight of which were involved in the derailment. Information on the contents of the freight cars was not yet available.

Cross honoring was in effect with NJT Bus and private carrier bus service.
