WESTFIELD, NJ — (Updated at 10:37 p.m.) Seven more women and five more men have died from coronavirus, bringing the total number of documented coronavirus fatalities of people from Westfield to 31, the mayor said.

Mayor Shelley Brindle reported the 12 new coronavirus deaths Monday night. Six of the newly reported dead lived at long term care facilities, Mayor Shelley Brindle said.

“When we see these numbers, let us not lose sight of the lives lost — as every one of these 31 fatalities to date was a member of our community who is mourned by all those they’ve left behind,” Brindle said.

The seven women were ages 94, 82, 81, 79, 78, 67, and 65; the five men were ages 98, 94, 89, 64, and 60, she said.

Nick Gismondi, a champion of Westfield baseball and an avid supporter of Westfield and athletics and member of the Westfield Boosters Hall of fame died last week, Brindle said.

“He was instrumental in bringing the Gumbert Park field house to fruition, and his legacy lives on in every Westfield kid that picks up a ball and bat,” she said.

Also among the dead are Candy Jacovino, secretary to the American Legion Post 3 Women’s Auxiliary and a longtime dispatcher with the Westfield Rescue Squad, Brindle said.

“We mourn with the Rescue Squad and all of the first responders on their loss, and remain grateful for Candy’s service to our community,” Brindle said.

The total number of people to test positive for COVID-19 in Westfield rose to 214 on Monday as the number of cases countywide rose to 12,011, Brindle said.

Across New Jersey, the total number of coronavirus cases rose to 111,188 and the total number of deaths rose to 6,044, according to the state Health Department.

While Gov. Phil Murphy’s stay-at-home order remains in effect, the governor on Monday announced benchmarks the state would use for reopening New Jersey. He did not give a timeline for reopening the state.
