WESTFIELD, NJ – What do you do if you run into a deer, or find a dead one for that matter?

In Westfield, Union County provides deer carcass removal through a contract with a private vendor. The public is advised to call the Westfield Regional Health Department at 908-789-4070 to facilitate dead deer pickups in the town.

After hours, residents are advised to call the Westfield Police Department. The non-emergency number 908-789-4000. The town will facilitate the pickup with the county’s vendor, Deer Carcass Removal LLC.

Under the county's contract with the carcass removal firm, the Cream Ridge-based company is on call Monday through Saturday and removes the carcasses within 36 hours of them being reported, unless the report is made on a Sunday.

If the deer is on public property, the government pays for the pickup. If the deer is on private property, then the cost is $65 per deer carcass, under the county’s contract.

Wildlife that appears sick or that died for reasons that aren’t apparent can be reported to the state DEP hotline by calling, toll-free, 877-WARN-DEP (877-927-6337). The DEP hotline is not to be used for routine road kills.
