Camp Speers YMCA is pleased to announce that through the generous support of The Westfield Foundation, Westfield families may apply for camperships to help send their children and teens to summer overnight camp this summer.

“Our roots are buried deep in the Westfield community,” notes Cherie Hammond, Director of Development.  “Camp is named for James M. Speers – a prominent Westfield businessman and civic leader who was instrumental in starting the Camp in 1948 as the first racially integrated YMCA Camp in the US.”

The funds provided by The Westfield Foundation will support Westfield children and teens participation in the summer resident camp program at Camp Speers YMCA.  For over 66 years we’ve provided Camperships to deserving children, teens and families from Westfield and around the world.  This donation will help us to ensure that we will never turn away a child from the experience that will transform his/her life because there wasn’t enough funding.

For more information about Camp Speers YMCA and the Campership Fund for Westfield youth, contact Cherie @ 570-828-2329 or Cherie@campspeersymca.org Visit the Camp’s website for information on all of Camp’s programs and for information on how you can support them.  www.campspeersymca.org

Why We Keep Kosher

Why We Keep Kosher

This week's parshah, Shemini, introduces the Torah's dietary laws. Animals must chew their cud and have split hooves to be kosher, fish need fins and scales, and a list of forbidden fowl is enumerated.

To those of us in Jewish education, it is a continuing source of disappointment that so many Jews still believe the kosher laws to be outdated.
