NORTH PLAINFIELD, NJ – A 36-year-old suspect charged in the hit-and-run death of a pedestrian May 15 has fled the country, according to Somerset County Prosecutor Michael H. Robertson.

Charges have been filed against Mario Infante, age 36, of New Street, Plainfield, following an investigation by detectives from the Somerset County Prosecutor's Office and North Plainfield Police.

A 57-year-old Plainfield resident was struck by a dark-colored sports utility vehicle while on Watchung Avenue around 1 a.m. May 15.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene after striking the victim, who was transported to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick where he was pronounced dead. 

 Two days later, police identified Infante as the suspect. 

Robertson said Infante fled the United States one day after the accident, May 16.

Infante is charged with 2nd degree, knowingly leaving the scene of a fatal motor vehicle accident.

He was placed into the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database as being a wanted person in Somerset County.
