Supporters of suicide prevention agency CONTACT We Care to join June 13 5K Walk/Run
Are you alive and running? You can help others stay alive by joining the “Alive & Running” CONTACT We Care 5K Walk/Run being held Saturday, June 13 at Nomahegan Park in Cranford. Every participant will receive a T-shirt and awards will be given to the overall top three male and female finishers, as well as the top three male and female finishers by age group.
The cost of participation is $25 ($15 for those 18 and under) and all money raised will go toward funding the operation of the agency's hotline, including keeping more than 200 trained volunteer listeners available for callers and texters whenever needed.
Headquartered in Westfield, CONTACT We Care is a suicide prevention agency that operates a suicide prevention and crisis intervention hotline and provides suicide prevention training to the public, community groups and businesses.
Every 13.7 minutes someone in the United States dies by suicide and more than 38,000 people died by suicide in 2010, including 4,600 young people.
“Studies show a decrease in feelings of emotional distress and suicide both during and following calls to a crisis hotline,” said Joanne Oppelt, CONTACT’s executive director. “The most effective solution for preventing suicide is interaction with another human being.”
