PLAINFIELD, NJ - Coinciding with the Tax March in Washington, DC, Plainfield was one of more than 200 communities across the country where people gathered to demand the release of President Trump's tax returns and a fair tax for all.

Maggie Savoca of Fanwood organized the event, held in Plainfield's Cedar Brook Park, that highlighted civic engagement and showcased a variety of politicians adding their voices to urge the President to release his tax returns.  Other issues featured in speeches included immigration and sanctuary cities, fair pay, the "Muslim ban" and criminal justice reform.

The first speaker was Plainfield's Mayor Adrian O. Mapp, who is up for re-election.

Gubernatorial candidate Ray Lesniak spoke about the need for criminal justice reform.  He said that all prisoners should have the opportunity to come out of prison a better person than they were when they were sent to jail.

He called for the support of same-sex marriage, equal rights for members of the LGBT community and immigrants, too.  Lesniak also snuck in the fact that he was the accordion player on the Grammy-nominated "Polkas with a Kick" by Jolly Rich and His Polka Stars.

Kurt Perhach, who has worked as an Army Prosecutor and hopes to give Leonard Lance a run for his money, called for leaders to propose a bill that would require every future Presidential candidate to release his or her tax returns.

Gubernatorial Candidate Bill Brennan spoke more on the need for "good paying jobs, a vibrant economy, state of the art infrastructure and, most importantly, a government with integrity."

Alma Blanco, running for City Council 2nd and 3rd Ward at Large in Plainfield, talked about her grassroots campaign, and the need to bring the message to the people.

Other speakers included:

  • Gubernatorial Candidates Jim Johnson and Seth Kaper-Dale
  • Assembly D22 Candidate Paul Alirangues
  • Councilman Bob Bresenhan, Jr.
  • Colin Sumner, WHS President Young Dems
  • Lt. Col. John L. Casey, USAF, Retired
  • Arielle Mizrahi, Outgoing President NJ Student PIRG
  • Stephanie Antoine, Hyacinth Foundation
  • Babs Casbar Siperstein, Democratic National Committee
  • Timothy Priano, Queen City Pride
  • M Ali Chaudry, a representative from NJ Working Families

Savoca thanked Timothy Priano of Queen City Pride, who was a sponsor of the day's event.
