The Musical Club of Westfield invites the public to a free concert on Wednesday, March 9, 2016, 7:30 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 170 Elm Street, Westfield, NJ. The concert will feature local and guest artists presenting the finest music from the 18th, the 19th, the 20th and the 21st centuries. Opening the program, Flora Pollack, flute, and Mary Beth McFall, piano, perform Sonate, Opus 2, No.4 by Michel Blavet, and Sonate pour Flûte et Piano by Francis Poulenc.

The concert continues with pianist John Blasdale playing the Impromptu in G Flat Major, Op. 90, No. 3, by Franz Schubert. Then Mr. Blasdale offers the first public performance of his own Elegy in E Minor (2016); John notes that “a theme from a Sonata that Beethoven composed in 1820 is the basis of the Elegy, though it is greatly varied.” Mr. Blasdale will conclude with Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata in F# Major, Op. 78.

The concert ends with a performance by guest artist Javier Oviedo, alto saxophone, and Marie Daniele Mercier, organ, of Rapsodie for Alto Saxophone and Organ, Op.108a by Paul Creston. There will be a reception following the concert where the audience will have an opportunity to meet the performers and enjoy light refreshments.
