WESTFIELD, NJ — Three Westfield firefighters were sworn in at Tuesday night’s town council meeting: John P. Gura, Thomas R. Bottini and Kevin M. Guidicipietro.
The new hires bring the paid department back to a size that the town hasn’t seen in years, with four platoons made up of eight men each. The size of the force had dwindled when the town cut back on staffing during the recession that began in 2008, and advocates had pushed to bring that number back up.
“It wouldn’t be possible without the support of Mayor Skibitsky, Acting Mayor Neylan and all of the other members of the town council and Jim Gildea, our business administrator,” Fire Chief David Kelly said. “I thank you all for all of your support.”
Westfield’s newest firefighters were welcomed by bagpipes.
“I wish you long and prosperous careers with the Westfield Fire Department,” Kelly told them.
