Union County College student Krystal Nicholas, of Roselle, is one of 10 students nationwide who was chosen to receive Phi Theta Kappa’s 2018 Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education, a $5,000 award.
The Pearson Scholarship for Higher Education is awarded to Phi Theta Kappa members who are civically engaged in their community through service and who demonstrate leadership, academic rigor, and excellence. Recipients who are first generation college students are given preference for consideration. Phi Theta Kappa received nearly 800 applications for the award this year.
“We are proud of all Krystal has done to engage Union students in community service and the leadership she has provided to her fellow PTK members,” stated Union’s President Dr. Margaret M. McMenamin. “Krystal is a student leader, a scholar, and an example of how Union students enforce our mission of transforming our community, one student at a time.”
As a Pearson Scholar, Krystal will receive $1,000 to complete her associate degree and $4,000 over two years to complete her bachelor’s degree. Krystal will also be paired with a Pearson Mentor and will have full access to the entire line of Pearson textbooks and online codes for her use to complete her degrees.
“We deeply appreciate Pearson’s partnership with Phi Theta Kappa to help our members complete both associate and baccalaureate degree programs,” said Dr. Monica Marlowe, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “The blend of financial and mentoring support provided by Pearson helps us assure success among these students. Congratulations to the scholarship recipients!”
