UNION, NJ – While most people are still thinking about Christmas, there are some who are concentrating on a different holiday: St. Patrick’s Day. Those people are the hard-working men and women of the Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.
The grand marshal of the 2016 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade was officially announced at Monday night’s parade committee meeting. Frank McGovern of Cranford has been selected as grand marshal for the 2016 parade.
Parade General Chairperson Kerry Ricci said, “In the past, we’ve had grand marshals who have done a lot for the parade. We’ve had grand marshals who have done a lot for the community. Frank has done so much for both. He gives back in many, many ways.”
McGovern has a long history with the parade. He was the parade’s 2005 general chairman, has for years coordinated the parade investiture and parade day masses and has been the parade day grandstand announcer.
“He’s the go-to person regarding all things parade,” said Ricci.
McGovern, manager at an electrical engineering company, said, “i\It’s an honor to be considered by my peers for this role. I am excited to be a part of this parade and all that it stands for year after year.”
The parade, he continued, is “about tradition and family.”
The 2016 Union County St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on Saturday, March 12. The parade is held in Union, and begins on Morris Avenue and Commerce Street and ends on Stuyvesant Avenue and Roosevelt Avenue. The parade begins at 1 p.m.
