WESTFIELD – The Westfield Board of Education unanimously voted to support the motion to name the updated concession stand at Westfield’s Kehler Stadium after former girls’ cross country and track & field Coach Thom Hornish.
“We are very grateful for the efforts of the Friends of Westfield Track to put together a concession stand that’s presentable and also we thank you for the opportunity and the suggestion that we name it after this amazing man who obviously made quite an impact on our track and field program at the high school,” said Board President Gretchan Ohlig.
“On behalf of the Friends of Westfield Track, I am here to personally thank each and everyone of you for passing this resolution tonight,” said Greg Kasko, president of the Friends of Westfield Track Organization.
The organization supported update efforts of the concession stand by adding new shelving, a new refrigerator, stoves and picnic tables.
“I can say with certainty that he’s looking down tonight with a humble heart and a big smile,” he said.
Hornish, who died in 2015 after a long battle with cancer, was a faculty member at Westfield High School for 41 years. He taught history and was the founder and coach of the girls’ cross country team up until he retired in 2014.
“Thom was a selfless man and the consummate educator. He loved his job,” Westfield Athletic Director Sandra Mamary said in 2015.
