WESTFIELD, NJ — In honor of Earth Day, the town of Westfield is once again inviting individuals, families and groups to volunteer for its annual spring cleanup event at green spaces all over town on Saturday, April 29, with a rain date of April 30.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring a pair of gloves and a rake, if possible, and arrive at one of the following locations between 10 a.m. and noon, where a member of the town council or Green Team will coordinate clean-up activities:

  • Brightwood Park
  • Clark Park
  • Grove Street at Grandview Avenue
  • Maryland Avenue at Grandview Avenue

Volunteers may also help clean up and plant at Mindowaskin Park from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. with the Friends of Mindowaskin Park (FOMP). Volunteers for this park should meet at the bandstand.

FOMP and the town of Westfield are preparing Mindowaskin Park for its 100th birthday celebration in 2018. Recently, Mindowaskin Pond was dredged and restored.

“We're hoping many residents turn out on the 29th to not only pitch in but to come see, close up, how beautiful the work has turned out,” Debby Burslem, president of FOMP, said. “We are in special need of some to bring leaf blowers and rakes to help clean out areas that were fenced off until just last week. We'll also be spreading mulch rings around various trees and in gardens. Wheelbarrows would be a great help, too. Private landscaping companies are welcome to volunteer, too.”

Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts who need to fulfill community service requirements are welcome to participate at any location. Minors must be supervised by a parent or adult guardian.

Drop-ins are welcome, but advance registration is encouraged. To register, click here. For specific information about the Mindowaskin cleanup or FOMP, call 908-233-0028 or email

Staying On Top

Some people are bulldozers. They move mountains, conquer countries, achieve the seemingly impossible. But then when there are no more mountains to climb, they falter. Routines, maintenance and sustainability are not their strong points. They respond to excitement and challenge, not to the uneventful, monotonous daily grind.

Can I Change My Partner?

March 21, 2018

Couples oftentimes look to change the “other.” “If only” the other would make these changes, or do as I say, our relationship would be great. We tend to focus on the other. We tend to focus on changing the other. We tend to focus on the other’s negative behavior. Couples like to report what their spouse/partner is doing and how they are ...
