The Wardlaw+Hartridge School in Edison recently observed Red Ribbon Week from Oct. 23-31. This positive campaign to promote healthy lifestyles was a huge success.
The Red Ribbon Team comprised of juniors who attended the Young Women’s Conference last May led many of the activities in all three divisions. After the Young Women’s Conference, W+H was given a $500 grant from Wellspring to work in conjunction with their staff to help promote drug awareness and pledge to live drug free.
On the first day, grades in all three divisions received strips of red paper and each student wrote a “drug free pledge” on a strip. The classroom teacher or advisor linked the strips and the Red Ribbon Team picked up the completed chain from each class or advisory. All three divisions were linked throughout the AP Room at the end of the week.
In addition, the Upper School shared facts about the dangers of drug use at each morning meeting. Upper School advisory groups also incorporated drug free activities into their Dream Big programs and competed in an Advisory Door Decorating Contest promoting drug awareness and drug free lifestyles. Middle School students created posters to promote similar positive drug free messages. Students in all three divisions enjoyed the opportunity to pose for selfies inside specially crafted red ribbon frames during lunch and meeting periods.
Wellspring judged the Upper School advisory classroom doors and provided many of the prizes. Each class winner as well as the overall champion received a dress down day and $5 gift card to Dunkin’ Donuts. Runners-up received a water bottle. Daily giveaways also included pencils, water bottles, red ribbons, bracelets and drug free certificates for each student in all three divisions.
